Denisovan woman hunting, illustration. This species, or possibly subspecies, of early human lived around 40,000 years ago and was found from Siberia to Southeast Asia. Genetic analysis of fossils has shown that Denisovans interbred with Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis). They are named for the Denisova Cave (location shown on map at top right) in Siberia, Russia, where the fossils were found.
