Human brain, illustration. The front of the brain is at top. This view from above shows the left and right hemispheres, with the longitudinal fissure (vertical, centre) separating them. Each hemisphere consists of a frontal lobe (top), temporal lobe (centre), parietal lobe (lower centre) and occipital lobe (bottom). The brain is the nerve centre controlling bodily function and thought. It interprets nerve signals received from the rest of the body and initiates the appropriate responses. The folded surface is the outer part of the cerebrum, the region responsible for intelligent thought, language, conscious movement and memory. The folds, called sulci, increase the surface area, allowing more neurons and a larger brain capacity without increasing the volume of the brain.
