Doctor and Death, 17th century. The figure of Death (centre) leads an elderly patient (right) to a meeting with a doctor (left). The two figures at left and right are Ancient Greek philosophers Democritus (left) and Heraclitus (right). This illustration, dating from 1651 and titled 'Dance of Death', is by Bohemian artist Wenceslaus Hollar after Hans Holbein the Younger after Abraham van Diepenbeeck. The Latin inscription 'Medice cura te ipsum' translates as 'Physician, heal thyself', and is an ancient Biblical quote.
