Light micrograph section through human liver tissue showing fatal fulminant hepatitis or Fulminant hepatic failure (FHF). This is a rare syndrome of rapid (usually within days or weeks), massive necrosis of the liver parenchyma and an actual decrease in liver size (acute yellow atrophy). It usually occurs after infection with certain hepatitis viruses, alcoholic hepatitis, or drug induced liver injury (DILI). Overall, the disease can quickly become life-threatening if medical attention is not sought immediately.
