Alexander L. Kielland oil rig disaster, illustration. This floating oil rig capsized on the evening of 27 March 1980 in stormy conditions in the North Sea, leading to the deaths of 123 people. The disaster occurred because one of the supporting legs collapsed after a stress fracture on a supporting brace gave way. This sequence (top to bottom) shows the rig going from its normal position to completely inverted.
