Huygens's experiments on elasticity. 19th-century illustration of the Dutch mathematician and physicist Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) experimenting on elasticity. He is carrying out collision between a ball on a string and different materials. He carried out these experiments from 1652, publishing his results in the 1660s. This work came close to identifying conservation of momentum. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
