He was commissioned into the 43rd (or Monmouthshire) Regiment of Foot in 1793, and subsequently served with the 80th and 84th Regiments. In 1798 he was appointed aide-de-camp to the King this was followed by active service in Holland and the Mediterranean. In 1801 he was created Earl of Craven, becoming lieutenant-general in 1811 and general in 1825.); by National Army Museum .
