Godstone Intermediate School -- The clock tower as seen from first floor bridge over courtyard. Home Office Schools or Approved Schools are intended for the education and training of boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 17 sent to them by the Courts either was young offenders or as needing care and protection. The schools are approved and inspected by the Home Office and costs are borne in equal proportions by the Exchequer and the local authorities out of local rates. In 1945 there were about 150 Approved Schools. These photographs were taken at Godstone, an Intermediate School where the boys divide their time between the schoolroom and training in such crafts as farming, gardening, woodwork and metal work.
