First deep field image released from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This full-colour infrared image shows galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, which lies 4.6 billion light years from Earth. It is the deepest, most detailed infrared image taken to date (July 2022). The galaxy cluster acts as a gravitational lens, allowing even more distant galaxies (red arcs) to be seen. The light from these galaxies has been travelling for over 13 billion years. The JWST was launched in December 2021. Composite image obtained by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). For the same galaxy cluster taken by the Hubble Space Telescope see C056/2183.
