Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an Entamoeba gingivalis amoeba (grey) entering a gingival cell (red) in vitro. This amoeboid protozoan colonizes healthy oral mucosa. Colonisation can be asymptomatic, and is not considered pathogenic. However, E. gingivalis is able to invade lacerated oral mucosa, where it ingests fragments of live cells (trogocytosis), suggesting pathogenic potential. Magnification: x6000 when printed at 15 centimetres wide.
