John Frederick Kensett; Untitled (landscape); 1850-1872; watercolor on off-white wove paper; 4 3/8 in. x 7 in. (11.11 cm x 17.78 cm); John Kensett began his artistic career as an engraver but embraced landscape painting while studying and traveling in Europe during the 1840s within a large circle of American artists.A successful painter in oils; he developed his style into one of great simplicity with abstract qualities. As a masterful luminist; he rendered atmospheric effects as pure light and color. By laying down washes; he achieved these effects with a monumentality that belies the small size of this sheet.
