Boston Phiale Painter; Attic Red-Figure Lekythos; ca. 430 BC; terracotta; 14 13/16 in. x 2 1/2 in. x 2 13/16 in. (37.62 cm x 6.35 cm x 7.14 cm); Originally designed as a perfume flask; this slender vessel is one of the highlights of the Museum's Attic vase paintings. To the left a young girl performs a dance step under the watchful eye of her teacher. The artist is the leading pupil of the renowned Achilles Painter; and was credited with introducing a more lively and human spirit into his scenes.
