Colombia; Paipa; Pantano de Vargas: group of young students in front of the Monument "Vargas Swamp Lancers" ("Los Lanceros del Pantano de Vargas"); built 1969; unveiled 1970; The monument was designed by artist Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt (1919 - 1995) and Colombian engineer Guillermo Gonzalez Zuleta. It is a bronze sculpture; framed in a concrete structure and shows the commander Colonel Juan Jos?Rond髇; 14 soldiers (lancers) and their horses. The 100 m long; 30 m wide and 33 m high monument is also called "Monument to the Lancers" ("Monumento a los Lanceros") and was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independance of Colombia in 1970. It recalls the Vargas Swamp Battle (Batalla del Pantano de Vargas) on 25th of July; 1819. The attack of Colonel Rond髇 and 14 lancers was the decisive action to win the battle for the army of Simon de Bolivar against the Spanish troops. The monument has a weight of 235 tons.
