Portugal; Oeste region; Peniche Peninsula: tower of Peniche Fortress; Peniche Fortress was constructed 1557 - 1567; 1589 and 1642 - 1645. The fortress has also the Santa Barbara Chapel and a tower; used as a prison even for German and Austrian prisoners of World War I and during the Salazar dictatorship. Most prominent prisoner 羖varo Pinhal; founder of the Communist Party of Portugal. He escaped out of the fortress; in 1960. Since 1984; the fortress is a museum for fhisery and has an ethnographic collection.
