Originally a Cistercian foundation of the 12th century; though right in the middle of town; it is nicely withdrawn in a close surrounded by old houses Originally the abbey church; its oldest parts are the E. and W. walls; the three lancets in the tower lit the nave. The fine moulded doorway below; of c. 1235; probably came from the chapter house. The rest of the church is of various dates; it was restored in 1872 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. It contains a magnificent rood screen of c. 1500; the loft is supported by fan vaulting on either side. The contemporary stalls have carved ends. There are numerous monuments and a bust of John Gibson; sculptor; by Wm. Theed.
