Buttress roots of a strangler fig (Ficus sp.) tree. These trees are named for their pattern of growth on host trees, which can often result in the host's death. This growth habit is found in many tropical rainforest species where where competition for light is intense. Photographed in Muelle San Carlos, Costa Rica.
