United States, 1913 Barney Oldfield, the best known race car driver in the world, reaffirms his decision to retire from the race game in a letter to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Barney refused to enter a car in the Harvest Auto Racing Classic to be held on Sept. 9 on the Indianapolis track. He assured T.E. Myers, general manager, that he would never come East again to enter competition, and said that it was probable that he never would drive even an exhibition mile. The photograph is one of the most recent taken of the "0ld Man of the Race Game", and it is considered one of the best, for it shows every line and gives ¡Ô? close-up view of the cigar which the driver is never with- out.
