The figure pictured here represents Chancellor Sir Thomas More in 1535. More was an English lawyer, social philosopher, author, statesman =, and noted Renaissance humanist. He was also an advisor to Henry VIII. After refusing to go with Henry on his wish to divorce Catherine of aragon, he was brought up on treason charges and executed. More wrote Utopia, a work of political fiction. The illustration dates to 1882.
