
This photo of the sculpture titled The Three Fates by Paul Thumann dates to 1898. Thumann was a German illustrator and painter who died in 1834. The Romans called then the Parcae the Greeks knew them as the Moirai or Moerae. By name they were Clotho, who spun the thread of a person's life; Lachesis, who measured the thread; and Atropos, who cut it. The Romans knew them as Nona, Decuma, and Morta.
