
This photo, dating to around 1908, shows Madame Fritzi Scheff, one of the most popular light opera singers at the time. She was Viennese by birth, made her debut n Frankfort as Juliet. Sang in all the cities of Europe in grand opera. She came to the United States in 1900, appearing in Fidelio, La Boheme, and I Pagliacci. She was married to Baron von Bardeleben, a German Hussar. She was nicknamed Paderewski ("the little deviling of grand opera").
