MODEL RELEASED. Eye inflammation. Ophthalmoscope view of an eye with Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis. Retinitis is the inflammation of the retina, the light-sensitive membrane of the inner eye. The optic disc, where the optic nerves and blood vessels enter the eye, is at left (white). Bleeding can be seen at upper centre as a result of this inflammation. CMV retinopathy usually occurs in immunocompromised individuals, such as those with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) or those who have recently had chemotherapy. CMV retinitis can cause blurred vision, eye pain, photophobia (fear of light), redness and blindness. Treatment is with antiviral medication.
