Edward Spencer (1799-1849), British balloonist and solicitor. The balloon at upper left shows the ascent made by Spencer and balloonist Charles Green (1785-1870) on 24 July 1837 from Vauxhall Gardens, London, UK. They carried aloft a parachute design by Robert Cocking (1776-1837). The parachute was released at a height of 1500 metres, but was poorly constructed and too heavy, breaking up at a height of 90 metres. Cocking was killed instantly on impact.
