Edward Spencer (1799-1849), British balloonist and solicitor. The balloon at upper left shows the ascent made by Spencer and balloonist Charles Green (1785-1870) on 24 July 1837 from Vauxhall Gardens, London, UK. They carried aloft a parachute design by Robert Cocking (1776-1837). The parachute was released at a height of 1500 metres, but was poorly constructed and too heavy, breaking up at a height of 90 metres. Cocking was killed instantly on impact. The text states that Spencer had made 27 ascents with Green up to 24 August 1839. Lithography by Day and Haghe, based on an artwork by George Perfect Harding (1780-1853).
