Queen of the night or night-blooming cereus, Peniocereus greggii, in bud. The stems of this night blooming cactus resemble the dry stems of the desert shrubs it grows within. It has a large tuberous root that can reach 50 lbs in size. The flower lasts only one night, wilting at sunrise. 2 dead flowers and an unopened bud can be seen. It is found from extreme sw TX west to AZ and south into Mexico. Photo White Sands Missile Range
