An aerial view showing squads of men cutting their way through drifts to the village of Bredhurst which, although only four miles from Chatham in Kent, was for a short period completely cut off from the outside world. At some points the drifts were several feet deep and no section of the road had less than 2 ft of snow. This scene is typical of the winter of 1947, one of the harshest in Britain's history.
