Fat necrosis of the human breast, light micrograph. Fat necrosis is a nonneoplastic inflammatory lesion characterised by necrotic adipose tissue with foamy histiocytes, chronic inflammatory cells and some preserved adipocytes. Fat necrosis in the breast may result from trauma, surgery or radiation. It appears as an induration lump that may cause breast pain.
