Submarine USS Nautilus. Commander William R. Anderson, commanding officer of USS Nautilus (SSN-571) and Dr Waldo Lyon, senior scientist, observe the thickness of the overhead ice during the vessel's voyage under the North Pole, August 1958. USS Nautilus was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine. She was also the first submarine to complete a submerged transit underneath the North Pole on 3 August 1958.
