Retinal blood vessels in albinism. Fundoscopy image of the retina of the left eye of a patient with albinism. The retinal vessels appear bright red, while choroidal vessels appear red-orange. The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Albinism is a genetic condition that results in a lack of pigmentation in the eyes, skin and hair. It leads to numerous problems with sensitivity to light in the eyes and skin. The gene causing this condition prevents the body from making the usual amounts of a pigment called melanin.
