Myopic macular degeneration. Fundoscopy image of the retina of a patients eye in a case of myopic macular degeneration. The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. A person with myopia is someone who is shortsighted or nearsighted. This is because the focal point of the light entering the eye falls in front of the retina instead of on it. In the case of myopic degeneration there are progressive fundus changes that get worse over time. Extensive retinal and choroidal thinning can result, exposing the sclera. The macula is the area of the retina responsible for central vision, which is the sharpest.
