Artwork of the head of the theropod dinosaur Giganotosaurus carolinii. This apex predator lived in what is now Argentina in the Late Cretaceous period, some 97 million years ago. It was one of the largest known carnivores, although its exact size is unknown due to incomplete fossil records. However, estimates in the range 12 to 13 metres in length put it on a par with the more famous (but unrelated) Tyrannosaurus rex. Giganotosaurus ('giant southern lizard') belongs to the group called Carcharodontosauridae, which includes other animals such as Mapusaurus and Carcharodontosaurus.
